NIH Support for 3rd & 4th Year PhD Students @UVA

Research progress during the 3rd and 4th year is often the most critical for ensuring that a student can complete an impactful body of PhD-level work within a reasonable timeframe. Thus, our training program is designed to establish scientific expertise, but also to ensure that students complete their PhD within the nationally defined average of ~5.5 years. Therefore, we have designed our training program around a core curriculum that includes: (1) A weekly Epilepsy Research Today course; (2) An informal, bi-weekly programming office hours called the Data Cooperative; and (3) Brief, concentrated workshops. This core curriculum is supplemented by several additional, training program- and UVA-sponsored training opportunities. Finally, as we ultimately aim to train scientists with strong quantitative and statistical skills, we also integrate the development of these skills throughout our training program.

Below is a snapshot that describes the courses generally taken by our NIH-supported trainees. That said, we often include trainees with alternative paths.
